LOWER EAST SIDE COMMUNITY GARDENS
Three decades ago, the Lower East Side was blighted by garbage-strewn vacant lots frequented by drug users and pushers.… Disgruntled residents started cleaning up [the abandoned lots] themselves and building their own green spaces for recreation. It became apparent that the gardens filled a huge need in the neighborhoods for community gathering places.…
Many of the gardens on the Lower East Side have been given permanent status under the parks department, although the sites of many others have been developed or are in jeopardy. Recently … more than 100 gardens have been saved from destruction.

The More Gardens! Coalition is a group of community people, gardeners, and environmental and social justice activists committed to revitalizing and enhancing existing community gardens and making more gardens.…
The coalition operates from a comprehensive five-pronged plan of action: legislative organizing: judicial actions; outreach and education; fundraising; and direct action. Some examples:
• Following on the visit by More Gardens! members with the attorney general [Eliot Spitzer] in Albany, his office filed a suit to secure the preliminary injunction that stopped the auction [of 114 community gardens] on May 5, 1999.
